Want To Plant A Tree In Your Name – I Can Help With That!

On October 17th, cannabis will become legal here in Canada – like it is in many states – such as beautiful Colorado, where we recently were.

This topic (legalization of marijuana) has been argued and discussed for years. Whether you are for or against it – the fact of the matter is that is WILL become legalized, so the best thing you can do is educate yourself on the subject.

Now, now that that is out of the way – on to the fun stuff!

Last week, I headed out to the Irisa Cannabis launch party here in Toronto.

Irisa Cannabis

Irisa celebrates wellness + discovery with thoughtfully crafted cannabis for modern women.

Irisa is a wellness-driven cannabis brand designed with the modern woman in mind.
WE CREATED IRISA BECAUSE WE BELIEVE…
  • that cannabis and wellness go hand-in-hand 🌿
  • that stoner stereotypes are a load of nonsense 💃
  • and that women are leading a revolution to unleash the positive potential of the plant ♀

The evening was filled with energy healing, aura readings, curated crystal sessions, ridiculously delish cocktails – but, no “product” (if you know what I mean) was at the event.

It was really interesting to learn more about the different strains, and it was really interesting to get my aura read.

And you know what – it was even cooler to learn more about a women-owned business aimed towards women.

Then – the other day I came home to find some pretty sweet #bloggermail waiting for me!

Muskoka Grown is a group of passionate cannabis growers from the Muskoka, ON area who are firm believers “that quality comes from honest, hard work, and from the passion to want to do it no matter what you’re creating.

Now I don’t know about you – but that’s a statement I can get behind!

Muskoka Grown

And these guys (and gals) don’t just talk the talk – they walk the walk. They’re all about the community and doing whatever they can to make it even just a little bit better. One such way is that they’re planting trees on behalf of anyone who wants to celebrate #NationalTreeWeek.

Muskoka Grown

To have a tree planted in your name, all you have to do is:
  1. Go to https://wegrowmuskoka.ca/
  2. Provide your name and email address

…there is no #3 – that’s it!

How easy is that?!

disclaimer: as I mentioned, I was invited out to the event and the gift was sent to me, but I believe both of these companies are dong great things for the world and you know what – we need more of that.

Save Our Scruff | The Scruff Social Presented by Healthy Pets

Save Our Scruff Toronto Scruff Social 2018

Honestly, after losing my first ever dog, Precious, last year – I didn’t know if I would ever be able to bring another dog into my life. Precious was there for me when I needed her the most. She was patient and attentive, and loved me unconditionally. My heart broke into a million pieces when her time came to leave my life, and to be honest – I still miss her every day.

The love and companionship a dog brings into your life is like no other.

What I Devour | The Best Chicken Parm Has Been Found At North York’s Hidden Gem – La Traviata

Have you ever had one of those meals at a restaurant where every single thing was delicious. I mean, like each thing you put in your mouth was better than the last?

…get your mind out of the gutter, guys.

Anyways, I had that type of meal last Friday and holy smokes, I’m already counting down the days until Mike and I can go back to La Traviata for another date night.

The bruschetta was a “build it yourself” dish, which worked out perfectly because I like to control the amount of toppings on mine. (I’m not a fan of overflowing tomatoes 🤷🏻‍♀️). The calamari was battered and fried to perfection. Then, when the mains came out – holy smokes. Honestly, I think this was the best chicken parm I have ever had…and I have had a lot of chicken parm.

la traviata

la traviata

The key to a good chicken parm, in my humble opinion, relies on a few factors.

  1. The chicken itself. It needs to be pounded out to an even thickness throughout. This will help with the cooking process, ensuring it’s cooked evenly.
  2. The breading. A good chicken parm will have a perfectly seasoned bread crumb breading that compliments the chicken and sauce and cheese.
  3. Which brings me to the cheese. Like I said – I’ve had my fair share of chicken parms in my life, and I’ve seen it all. I’ve seen a restaurant try to pull of a chicken parm using cheddar cheese. Excuse me while I dry heave. NO THANK YOU. Do it right, with mozzarella and parmesan, or don’t do it at all. Mmmkay?
  4. A good chicken parm will have enough sauce to ensure every bite gets a little bit of everything, but not too much sauce that it’s drowning and causing a soggy cutlet. Ain’t nobody got time for that.
  5. The sides are crucial too. I mean, if it’s a chicken parm sandwich – that’s a completely different story. Then the bread would play a huge factor. But serving chicken parm as your main means you have to have the right sides. Pasta is an obvious choice, and in my opinion – the right one.

La Traviata knocks it out of the park on all counts. The chicken was the perfect portion, and the breading, cheese, and sauce were not only delicious – but evenly distributed meaning every bite got some of the ooey gooey deliciousness. The side of pasta was perfectly al dente and a savoury companion for the main event.

BRB – I’m drooling on my keyboard.

Now that we live midtown-ish, it takes a lot of effort to go downtown. So to find this amazing hidden gem only a 13 minute drive from our place is a god send! 🙌🏼

So, if you’re ever up in North York – hit up La Traviata and thank me later. Even better – bring me with you!

To be 100% honest, Mike’s friend owns this restaurant – but none, I repeat none, of this is sponsored. I wasn’t asked to write this post. We paid for our dinner, and are eagerly planning our next visit.

PS: I HATE that my numbered list capped out at 9…I may come back and randomly add something to make it 10, because #ocd.

Oh, Hello October – Nice To See You Again

Can you believe it’s already October? Honestly, it feels as though 2017 and is just flying by. I don’t know what it is…maybe time just seems to go by that much quicker the older we get?

*sigh*

Whatever it is, I’m making a genuine effort to slow down in my day to day life and make the time to enjoy the moments, both small and big.

This past week or so was no exception. Between birthday celebrations (not mine, yet), fun events, and an impromptu date night – it was definitely one for the books!

Celebrate good times, come on!

celebration gif

Last weekend, I took Jen out for a celebratory birthday dinner. Jen is one of those friends that while we met each other later in our lives (like, seriously – only a couple of years ago) – we instantly clicked. SHe’s become one of my closest friends, and I am incredibly lucky to have a friend like her in my life. Anyways, enough with the mushy gushy stuff! We headed out to Marben for our girls night, and there was wine, there was delicious food, and there were glasses of bubbly. Throw in the great company, and what more could a gal ask for!?

On Tuesday evening I invited my friend Shannon out to check out the media paunch of the new brewhouse, Northern Maverick Brewing. First off – the space is gorgeous. I absolutely loved the open ceilings, and you can see the tanks where they brew their in-house brewskiis. Not only are their in-house brewed brewskiis delish – but they also make some ahhhhmazing cocktails. There were A LOT of people at the media launch, so I didn’t get a chance to fully experience the restaurant – but I’m def looking forward to heading back. I hear the burgers are legit some of the best in the city…I’ll just have to try it out for myself and report back!

Drink D’Ont Poke The Bear Wine AND Support A Good Cause? Umm, I Can Do That!

One of the fun things I get to do through my blog is go to fun events and launches and tastings and parties. And every now and then a brand, or product, will stick out a little more so than the others. Recently, that was D’Ont Poke the Bear wines.

I went to my home away from home, the iYellow Wine Club for an intimate evening spent with wine lovers galore and one of the D’Ont Poke the Bear winemakers and founder, Andrew Von Teichman.

We spent the evening trying out both of the D’Ont Poke the Bear wines available, and learning all about how they became to be.

Apples And Rope Swings And Alpacas – Oh My! Our Day At Chudleigh’s Farm

Chudleigh's Farm
I grew up in a single-parent household. My mother was (and still is) one of the most hard-working people I have ever met. She struggled day in and day out to provide for my sister and I, to ensure there was food on the table and a roof over our heads. We didn’t get a lot of the same privileges my peers would get. I can remember going to school on a Monday morning, or after summer break, and hearing tales of what my peers got up to. Be it escapes to the cottage or camp, or even day trips on fun-filled excursions, and feeling a pang of resentment and jealousy.

Now that I’m (many, many) years older – I can fully grasp just how difficult it must have been for my mother. Struggling to get by, with little to no outside help…wishing that she could do just a little bit more. Mommy (yes, I still call my mother Mommy – she’s even saved in my phone contacts as such) – if you’re reading this – THANK YOU. Thank you for always being there and doing the absolute best you can. I think my sister and I turned out pretty darn great, if I do say so myself!

That being said, while I may not have any kids of my own (as of yet), I have been fortunate enough to be blessed with some amazing opportunities. And when such fun and exciting family-orientated opportunities come my way, I try to involve my nieces as often as possible.

Chudleigh's Farm
One such opportunity recently came my way, and it was the perfect way to close out our summer!

I brought my sister and nieces out for a fun-filled day on at Chudleigh’s Farm full of delicious foods, apple picking, hay rides, alpacas, and so much more!

But – did I mention the alpacas?!

CONTEST | Re-Vamping The Classic Lunchbox With Foodora

#BackToDrool with foodora

Listen, I don’t know about you – but I absolutely love the autumn. The weather is cool enough for a sweater or light jacket, but not so cold that you need your winter parka. The leaves are changing colours showing us just how beautiful it is to let go of the things that are holding us back from growth. Plus, when I was a kid – getting ready for back to school was one of my most favourite times of the year!

Bonus: I’m an October baby, so yeah – obviously I love this season!

Do you remember when we were kids and we would be prepping to go back to school for the new year? We’d get a couple of new outfits, new binders and pencils – and a new backpack and lunchbox if we were lucky.

Then school would start, and lunchtime would come. We’d huddle up with our closest friends and devour whatever it was that our parents had packed for us.

You know – the staples: PB & J, ham and cheese, Nutella (if you were really lucky), a variety of cold cuts slabbed between some good old fashioned white bread…the same old, same old.

Well, the fun doesn’t have to stop now that we’re no longer in school!

My friends at foodora have partnered with some local restaurants and are re-vamping the lunchbox classics for back to school season!

Participating restaurants:

Charadise-BacktoSchool-CrispyChicken Waffle Grilled Cheese

Charidise – Crispy Chicken Wafflewich ($11.99)
Crispy chicken, fresh greens, and 100% real cheddar cheese cradled between two fluffy Charidise waffles. Comes with a side of maple syrup.
