Save Our Scruff Toronto Scruff Social 2018

Honestly, after losing my first ever dog, Precious, last year – I didn’t know if I would ever be able to bring another dog into my life. Precious was there for me when I needed her the most. She was patient and attentive, and loved me unconditionally. My heart broke into a million pieces when her time came to leave my life, and to be honest – I still miss her every day.

The love and companionship a dog brings into your life is like no other.

When Mike and I slowly started to discuss bringing a dog into our new home together, we put a lot of thought into it. As amazing as the companionship is – they are also a lot of work. A LOT.

Especially rambunctious pups like, Dusty LOL

But, the love you get back in return makes it oh-so-worth-it.

Me: *drops the tiniest bit of food on the floor* Dusty: You gonna eat that?

And the more we talked about it – the more I realized I was ready. The ache of missing my baby girl, Precious was still there…it always will be, but the excitement of adding to our little fur-family grew with every adorable doggie that we looked at.

While on our quest to find the perfect puppy last year, we looked at many (MANY) different adoption agencies, and one just happened to be Save Our Scruff. While we didn’t bring Dusty home through this agency, I did grow to appreciate everything they do!

Save Our Scruff is a non-profit organization located in Toronto dedicated to rescuing dogs and finding them safe and suitable permanent homes through adoption, advocacy and education.

Last year, Save Our Scruff hosted the inaugural Scruff Social. The event was a huge hit, selling out and raising $37,000! The team is looking to double their efforts this year and YOU can help by coming out for a night of cocktails, live entertainment, interactive stations, and you’ll even get a chance to interact with some of the Save Our Scruff pups!

If that’s not reason enough to come out, I don’t know what is!

We are proud to assure you that your support goes directly to providing life-saving services for homeless dogs. Save Our Scruff does not receive any financial support from federal, provincial, or municipal government agencies. We rely solely on donations from members of our compassionate, animal-loving community. Proceeds from this event will go directly towards the dogs to pay for veterinary care, transportation and training, and advocacy work.

CONTEST | Tis The Season For Giving Back | Feeling Festive #WithRogers And Friends

Feeling Festive #WithRogers And Friends

The snow is falling, the trees are all lit, the carolers are caroling and Santa’s big day is quickly approaching!

Are you feeling festive yet?!

One of the sure-fire ways to get in the holiday spirit is by giving back. When you give back and share small acts of kindness – you’re actually giving back a lot more than you think. That random act of kindness could provide the smile someone needed that day. Your random act of kindness could inspire others around you, which will cause a ripple effect of kindness. And let’s face it – the world needs a little more kindness now more than ever.

What are some ways you can give back this holiday season?
  • There are so many families who struggle, especially during the holidays. Collect canned food to donate to a food bank to help feed those in need.
  • Clean up your closet and donate some old coats and dewaters to a homeless shelter. Take it up a notch and add in some (clean and new) socks. Socks are the most needed, but least donated item of clothing for the homeless.
  • Get in the kitchen and bake some sweet treats for your neighbours and coworkers to put a smile on their face.
  • Pick up the phone and call someone you haven’t spoken to in awhile. Check in on that friend who was having a rough go. The holidays are the perfect time to connect with loved ones, near and far – and #WithRogers, you can stay connected not only during the holidays, but all year long.
Now, I’ve got another way you can spread some holiday cheer this season and it’s a fun one!

Just in time for the holidays, I’ve partnered with my friends at Rogers, Samsung, Google, Huawei, and The Shopping Channel to give back and spread some festive cheer with some fun giveaways!

#JJcooks | Easy Peasy Stove-Top Chicken Pot Pie

#JJcooks stove top chicken pot pie

I don’t know about you, but as the days get shorter, and the weather gets colder – all I crave is good old fashioned comfort food. And one of my (and Mike’s) all-time favourite comfort foods is most certainly a classic – chicken pot pie.

But after a long day at the office – the last thing I want to do is spend hours in the kitchen, hunched over a stove cooking. I mean, I always have a glass of wine in hand while cooking…but even that’s not enough motivation for me to spend hours in the kitchen on an average Tuesday night. So that’s when I start looking for quick and easy alternatives to some of the classics, and I recently found a recipe that’s now a new favourite in our house!

Easy Peasy Stove-Top Chicken Pot Pie

my easy peasy (and quick!) stove top chicken pot pie recipe on le blogaroo! <link in bio>

A post shared by Jenn and the City (@thejennandthecity) on

This recipe is not only easy – but it’s also quick. Using a pre-cooked rotisserie chicken really cuts back on cooking time. Seriously – with prep and everything, we were seated with a piping hot bowl of deliciousness within 40 minutes. I made some slight modifications to the one I found online, and like I said – it’s a new favourite in our house…especially on those cold days. Which, if you’re living up here in Toronto like us – are quickly approaching!

Oh, Hello October – Nice To See You Again

Can you believe it’s already October? Honestly, it feels as though 2017 and is just flying by. I don’t know what it is…maybe time just seems to go by that much quicker the older we get?

*sigh*

Whatever it is, I’m making a genuine effort to slow down in my day to day life and make the time to enjoy the moments, both small and big.

This past week or so was no exception. Between birthday celebrations (not mine, yet), fun events, and an impromptu date night – it was definitely one for the books!

Celebrate good times, come on!

celebration gif

Last weekend, I took Jen out for a celebratory birthday dinner. Jen is one of those friends that while we met each other later in our lives (like, seriously – only a couple of years ago) – we instantly clicked. SHe’s become one of my closest friends, and I am incredibly lucky to have a friend like her in my life. Anyways, enough with the mushy gushy stuff! We headed out to Marben for our girls night, and there was wine, there was delicious food, and there were glasses of bubbly. Throw in the great company, and what more could a gal ask for!?

On Tuesday evening I invited my friend Shannon out to check out the media paunch of the new brewhouse, Northern Maverick Brewing. First off – the space is gorgeous. I absolutely loved the open ceilings, and you can see the tanks where they brew their in-house brewskiis. Not only are their in-house brewed brewskiis delish – but they also make some ahhhhmazing cocktails. There were A LOT of people at the media launch, so I didn’t get a chance to fully experience the restaurant – but I’m def looking forward to heading back. I hear the burgers are legit some of the best in the city…I’ll just have to try it out for myself and report back!

Drink D’Ont Poke The Bear Wine AND Support A Good Cause? Umm, I Can Do That!

One of the fun things I get to do through my blog is go to fun events and launches and tastings and parties. And every now and then a brand, or product, will stick out a little more so than the others. Recently, that was D’Ont Poke the Bear wines.

I went to my home away from home, the iYellow Wine Club for an intimate evening spent with wine lovers galore and one of the D’Ont Poke the Bear winemakers and founder, Andrew Von Teichman.

We spent the evening trying out both of the D’Ont Poke the Bear wines available, and learning all about how they became to be.

I’m Not Lazy…I’m Time Efficient (Or Hungover) – But truLOCAL Saved The Day(s)

One of my new-found favourite pastimes is getting up on Saturday or Sunday morning and heading to the grocery store with Mike to do a big shop. We’ll get stuff to make for breakfast that morning (along with the obligatory stop at the liquor store for brunch cocktail necessities), a variety of things for lunches throughout the week, and usually at least a few days worth of dinner supplies. It’s something so simple and pure – but when we go, it’s just he and I spending that time together. No phones as distractions, no TV to watch…just the two of us cracking jokes throughout the supermarket.

trulocal meat subscription (1)

That being said, this lovely pastime doesn’t get to happen on a regular. Sometimes Mike works on the weekend, sometimes we’re very lazy and prefer to just stay home and in our PJs all day (or, as was the case most recently – I was too hungover thanks to the #TIFFBachelorParty). But either way – our fridge needs to get stocked and it’s not always convenient to make stops after work for whatever we need for dinner. Especially when we have a really busy week lined up, with a few different days scheduled of entertaining guests at our place.

Such was the case recently when we had a few friends over for a BBQ and games night, then Mike’s parents over for another BBQ the following day…not to mention our weekly date night dinners at home which is another favourite pastime of mine.

Luckily, my friends at truLOCAL reached out to at literally the most perfect time!

truLOCAL is introducing simple monthly meat plans that deliver high-end, locally sourced meat products right to your door, anywhere in Ontario.

It was so simple! Almost too easy, actually. LOL

truLOCAL meat subscription

I logged on to the truLOCAL website, chose my plan (I went with a one-time, 1-person box because this was a trial provided by truLOCAL for me to review their service). I picked which meats I preferred, and bing-bang-boom – I was done.

Sometimes A Gal Just Needs A Little Alone Time With Montes Wine

Mike and I have officially been living together for a few months now, and while it’s still glorious (s/o to the Roode crew, y’all know who you are) – I have to admit – it is not always easy.

Bobby Roode gif

Moving in together is a BIG step in a relationship, no matter how long (or short) you’ve been together. Before we moved in together, we were spending almost all of our free time together. We were together more often than not, spending nights at each others houses. But living together – phew, that’s a whole different thing.

Let me preface this next little bit by saying, I simply adore Mike. He is literally my most favourite person in the world. Being with him makes my heart happy and I love spending time with him.

“one million words can’t describe how it feels to know your love”

A post shared by Jenn and the City (@thejennandthecity) on

That being said…a gal needs her alone time. Am I right? If you are, or ever have, living with a partner (or heck, even with roommates) you’ll know what I’m talking about. There are just some things that you need want to do and can only do when you’re alone, and on top of that – sometimes a gal (or guy) just needs a little peace and quiet and alone time.

Thankfully, I’ve been blessed with a man who totally understands and appreciates this. Unfortunately for him, I can be somewhat needy and a homebody – so he may not get as much alone time. LOL

BUT – for the record, this IS something I’m working on. So, there’s that.

Anyways…back to what I was saying.

As someone who lived on her own for many years prior to moving in with Mike, I crave my alone time. It’s not even like I’m really doing anything in particular (for the most part) – but sometimes I just want to put on a face mask, paint my toe nails, and pour myself a nice glass of wine and listen to early ’90’s pop music. You know what I mean?

Anyways, that’s exactly what I did the other night while Mike was working late, and it was fanfreakingtastic.

Montes Wine

My friends at Montes Wine sent me over a few bottles of Montes Spring Harvest Sauvignon Blanc 2016 and Montes Alpha Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 to try. I cracked open the Cab Sauv, poured myself a nice, big glass and covered my face with a charcoal mask as I painted my toenails.

Apples And Rope Swings And Alpacas – Oh My! Our Day At Chudleigh’s Farm

Chudleigh's Farm
I grew up in a single-parent household. My mother was (and still is) one of the most hard-working people I have ever met. She struggled day in and day out to provide for my sister and I, to ensure there was food on the table and a roof over our heads. We didn’t get a lot of the same privileges my peers would get. I can remember going to school on a Monday morning, or after summer break, and hearing tales of what my peers got up to. Be it escapes to the cottage or camp, or even day trips on fun-filled excursions, and feeling a pang of resentment and jealousy.

Now that I’m (many, many) years older – I can fully grasp just how difficult it must have been for my mother. Struggling to get by, with little to no outside help…wishing that she could do just a little bit more. Mommy (yes, I still call my mother Mommy – she’s even saved in my phone contacts as such) – if you’re reading this – THANK YOU. Thank you for always being there and doing the absolute best you can. I think my sister and I turned out pretty darn great, if I do say so myself!

That being said, while I may not have any kids of my own (as of yet), I have been fortunate enough to be blessed with some amazing opportunities. And when such fun and exciting family-orientated opportunities come my way, I try to involve my nieces as often as possible.

Chudleigh's Farm
One such opportunity recently came my way, and it was the perfect way to close out our summer!

I brought my sister and nieces out for a fun-filled day on at Chudleigh’s Farm full of delicious foods, apple picking, hay rides, alpacas, and so much more!

But – did I mention the alpacas?!

CONTEST | Re-Vamping The Classic Lunchbox With Foodora

#BackToDrool with foodora

Listen, I don’t know about you – but I absolutely love the autumn. The weather is cool enough for a sweater or light jacket, but not so cold that you need your winter parka. The leaves are changing colours showing us just how beautiful it is to let go of the things that are holding us back from growth. Plus, when I was a kid – getting ready for back to school was one of my most favourite times of the year!

Bonus: I’m an October baby, so yeah – obviously I love this season!

Do you remember when we were kids and we would be prepping to go back to school for the new year? We’d get a couple of new outfits, new binders and pencils – and a new backpack and lunchbox if we were lucky.

Then school would start, and lunchtime would come. We’d huddle up with our closest friends and devour whatever it was that our parents had packed for us.

You know – the staples: PB & J, ham and cheese, Nutella (if you were really lucky), a variety of cold cuts slabbed between some good old fashioned white bread…the same old, same old.

Well, the fun doesn’t have to stop now that we’re no longer in school!

My friends at foodora have partnered with some local restaurants and are re-vamping the lunchbox classics for back to school season!

Participating restaurants:

Charadise-BacktoSchool-CrispyChicken Waffle Grilled Cheese

Charidise – Crispy Chicken Wafflewich ($11.99)
Crispy chicken, fresh greens, and 100% real cheddar cheese cradled between two fluffy Charidise waffles. Comes with a side of maple syrup.
