Hi everyone. My name is Jenn, and I’m a whisky drinker.
*collective “Hi, Jenn.”*
I never in the world thought that I would say that. I always thought of whisky as a drink for the suits down on Bay St. Little did I know that after a couple lessons on what to drink, and how to drink it – I’d become hooked!
Fun Fact: Did you know Canadian Club whisky has been around for more than 150 years?
Whisky is much like wine, which – as you all know – I love.
You need the proper glass.
You swirl the whisky and look for the “legs.”
You smell the whisky with your lips slightly parted.
You sip the whisky .
Last week I had the opportunity to try out the newest premium whisky from Canadian Club – the Chairman’s Select 100% Rye. The Canadian Club 100% Rye is made 100% from single grain rye and 100% right here in Canada. Aged in high quality bourbon barrels with rye grain, this whisky is distilled at Alberta Distillers Ltd., and then finished and bottled in Walkerville, Ontario. The Canadian Club 100% Rye is the first 100% rye whisky to be launched by one of the top three selling whisky brands in Canada and it is delicious, with hints of caramel, vanilla and oak.
“Aged using only rye grain in high quality bourbon barrels to impart a character that results in a taste forward, smooth and premium whisky. This is what appeals to the discerning palates of a new generation of whisky drinkers and bartenders who want the robust spiciness of rye that works so well with classic cocktails such as the Manhattan and Old Fashioned.”
Once I walked into the venue, Citizen (formerly Brant House where I have many, many memories from but that’s a whole different post all in itself) I was greeted with a cocktail. A glass of the Canadian Club 100% Rye, rosemary syrup and bitters. This was seriously one of my favourite cocktails from the evening. So simple – perfect for sipping.
The venue had multiple stations set up, where we would learn to craft our own cocktails, as well as try different food pairings with said cocktails. As we were sipping our cocktails, and exploring the different stations – there were platters and platters of delicious food being passed around. That lamb – OMG – addictive!
However, the highlight of the night was the portfolio tasting with Canadian Club Brand Ambassador, Tish Harcus. Tish, who was a blast and a half, walked us through four different, but equally delicious whiskys and helped us note the difference between each.
First up we had the Premium 1858. With hints of vanilla, toffee and cinnamon.
Followed by a Classic 12 Year Old. This one had hints of caramel and was one of my top two out of the four.
Next was the star of the evening, and my personal favourite – the Canadian Club Chairman’s Select 100% Rye. As Tish put it, this batch is “toasty and toffee, creamy and complex.”
The final of the four was the Sherry Cask, which had fruity, and spicy tones.
This premium Canadian whisky is crafted 100% from single grain rye. Aged to perfection, it’s the purest expression of rye whisky, with more complexity, character and spiciness than other Canadian whiskies. It has the smooth taste you expect from Canadian Club® – making it the perfect choice for special occasions. Like Tuesdays.
How to Drink CC 100% Rye
Canadian Club Chairman’s Select 100% Rye is best enjoyed neat or on the rocks. The ryeforward spiciness of this whisky lends itself to classic cocktails such as the Manhattan and Old Fashioned and when paired with citrus fruits such as lemon, ginger and warm spice flavours such as cinnamon and cardamom.
